Stroock has a strong tradition of training and mentoring and places an emphasis on professional development. Many of our partners started as summer associates and have spent their entire careers here. Others have gone on to the state and federal judiciary or entered the academic world as law professors. Our attorneys are co-authors of leading legal treatises and regularly contribute to legal periodicals, such as the New York Law Journal and The National Law Journal.
This emphasis on training is seen in both formal programs and informal relationships. Stroock understands that education and training are essential to an attorney’s development and career satisfaction. Our attorneys play a critical role in training and guiding both incoming and junior associates in developing their legal skills and career goals.
In addition to an overall culture that is focused on developing junior attorneys through one-on-one mentoring relationships, Stroock’s Mentoring Program helps first- and second-year associates plan and successfully launch their careers with the help of trained mentors. Developed in connection with the firm’s diversity efforts, the Mentoring Program also includes initiatives to expand business development opportunities and mentoring pairings keyed to each associate’s needs and strengths.
For women and attorneys of color, the Mentoring Program is especially valuable in showcasing successful paths to practice proficiency, career planning, networking, and defining strategies to achieve personal and professional goals.
All entering associates are paired with two mentors – a mid-level associate and a partner – who offer guidance on short-term and day-to-day issues as well as mid- and long-term career development strategies. Unique to Stroock, entering associates are involved in choosing their mentors. This enables associates to pair with mentors who can help them meet individual goals and develop their distinctive interests and talents.
Associates meet regularly with their mentors on an informal basis to assess goals and progress, discuss opportunities, and to take full advantage of the professional training and career development options available at Stroock.
